Death Doula…What is it?
The death and dying industry has been around before man even knew what an industry was. We’ve been going through the dying process since the dawn of time. In the present, there are so many components to it. There’s hospice, funeral homes, morgues, cremation services, green burial options…the list could go on and on. Death doulas have been around for a long time, but are just now getting the recognition and title. Anyone can be a death doula (also known as an end of life doula or death midwife). If you have supported someone while they are actively dying and taking the journey onto whatever is next, you have acted as a death doula. In definition, a death doula is someone who provides non-medical holistic support to someone who is dying or to the loved ones of the dying or recently dead. The services death doulas provide can be vast! Some focus on providing support to those who are actively dying, some aim their services to planning what will happen after death, some even organize living funerals, where a funeral is thrown while the guest of honor is still alive. It sounds strange, but it’s a great way for people to hear what others would say about them after they have passed while they’re still here. There are death doulas who don’t even offer services to clients, but host workshops for people who are interested in the industry or on an array of subjects revolving around death, dying and grieving. It is not currently a regulated industry and is still in the pioneer stages, but I am oh so happy and proud to be here. I appreciate you taking the time to read and visit.
